Week 3 Assignment 1

.      Shared reading. The teacher, Mrs. Perez, sits with the students and reads poems. Every week the teacher introduces a new poem with different sight words. These words are usually high frequency work. She teaches a lesson from these poems every week too. The teacher also reads to master vowels with her students. This is done by associating vowels with key work. For example E is for egg. Mrs. Perez used observational checklist for each student to check their progress. The checklist includes different read-aloud, shared, guided and independent reading as well as interactive and independent writing. This is all to formally track the child’s development and elements of the classroom such as, physical space, different materials, tones, and space. It is essential to focusing on each child’s progress individually and trying to implement different activities so each child can gain what he or she needs.  Using formal and informal assessment is a great strategy to help keep track of the child.
2.      Guided reading  different group activities that students learn skills together in a group setting. Every child comes into the class on a different stages and builds up from there.  It is important for children to learn fluency, site words, vocabulary, comprehension and connection to the text.    When the students verbalize their strategies it makes them internalize it. Automatically when students verbalize and keep repeating what they learn it stays with them.  When the students face a struggle in real life with these tools, they will be able to help themselves on their own.
3.      Differentiated instruction.  Ms Perez uses many activities to access each child’s level. She found many different types of activities to use in this manor. She found that to help a child be able to read words making read wall activities would help that. Focusing on different sound sequences and high frequency words, like sight words, teaches them different sounds and words. Mrs. Perez allows the students that are in a higher level with reading to choose a book on their own. In this video they chose a book on “Spiders." These students were so advanced that they were able to take notes and categorize on their own.
4.      Assessment Ms. Perez is an excellent teacher who has a lot to offer for different teachers and people to learn from. Firstly, it is the utmost importance to focus on each child individually and get to know the ins and outs of each student personally. You need to get to know the child as a person and not just a student. We have to see where each student comes from and their personal background. The first few days of school Mrs. Perez records a record of the background of each student on a chart that she herself created and writes down their progress often.  She writes down vertically all the books that she will be teaching and horizontally she writes down all the students names in the class. Later on in the year, Mrs. Perez does the same assessment to see where each student is up to and what they have gained so far. It is essential to assess each child in order for the teacher to be able to give proper instruction to the child.Teachers have to work on and try to implement different activities to help their students come to the goal originally established in the beginning of the year. By using informal assessment regularly and observing the students on daily basis a teacher should be able to have each student individually assessed and know exactly where they have progresses and where they need more work.
